Q & A with D.F. Bailey
Q What inspired you to compile this boxset?
First Four is a collection of my first four thrillers—including the W. H. Smith First Novel Award finalist—Fire Eyes. Over the last three years I’ve written four books in my crime series which begins with Bone Maker. I know that the crime series is going to absorb my attention for many more years. So I wanted to package the earlier books into one collection for readers who might enjoy those books in a boxset format.
Q How long have you been writing?
I started to write at an early age, around age ten. When I was 25 I tried to write a novel (now tucked safely away in the bottom drawer of my desk). My first novel, Fire Eyes, came out when I was 36.
Q Are you a plotter or pantser?
A bit of both. I like the first and last scenes of a new novel to “appear” in my imagination before I begin to write the first draft. Then when I’m in the groove, I tend to map out the direction in chunks of four or five chapters. I always like to reserve plenty of room for the plot and characters to find their own direction, which makes me more of a pantser, I guess. However, outlines are important to me.
Q If you could bring one of your characters to life, who would it be?
Hmmm. Some of my characters have actually frightened me. Others are inspiring. However, Teejay Flood, the young girl In Exit From America, has a remarkable personal toughness mixed with the heart of a young saint, and an emotional IQ that is through the roof. I’ve already learned a lot from her. Seeing her in reality every day would likely make me a better person in every way.

This is the first time I have read this author's books, and I can't wait to read more. He really keeps you on your toes with all the twist and turns. You get drawn in and not let go until the end. If you like thrillers then you should get this set.

Surprised about the depth. Very well written, on a darken look about human nature.
Some characters scared me, some made me think about my own actions and inspired me.
It's all about fear, despair, guilt, anguish, redemption, forgiveness... Moments we can related and take a new look.
This is an author I really enjoy reading and this is the perfect "intro" for anyone who is not familiar with his work. My favorite of these is "The Good Life" but you can't go wrong with any of them. Since these are thrillers with twists and turns, I don't want to give anything away. I was given this set for an honest opinion, but I had previously bought them on my own as this is an author not to miss. Buy your own - you won't be disappointed.!
I received an ARC of this set of four novels from the author with the promise of an honest review. To date I have read "Healing the Dead" and "The Good Lie". They were both fantastic reads! I'm a fan of psychological dramas, so these two novels were "right up my alley". The characters were deep and brooding, and entrapped by their own minds. I plan on reading "Fire Eyes" and "Exit from America" within the next few weeks. Mr. Bailey is a great storeyteller. His characters come alive via his crisp and polished writing. At a dollar for all four books, you can't go wrong by picking up this collection.
Disheartened? Depressed? Despairing? Then sit right down and read this series of intricate sagas about broken hearts and minds, sagging spirits, and self-flagellating sad sacks. You'll immediately feel superior because your woes can't be as bad as these! From the pre-teen lad who watches his younger sister shoot and kill his best buddy to the almost-drowning kayaker who unintentionally sends his friend's daughter into a coma by slashing her with a paddle, from the kid who has to survive punishment in a dog cage to the five stressed souls who slowly discover that others are preying on them -- these are gripping tales of mental anguish and personal torment that can but may not be overcome.
If you are ready to be immersed in the darker side of one's personality and if you have ever wondered what you would do in certain circumstances that will affect the rest of your life - this is the boxed set for you.
My favorite book of the set is The Good Lie - when a kayaking accident puts a young girl in a coma and leaves a man feeling guilty for his role as a victim in the same accident, he heads down a dark path that affects both his mental and physical health.
While I only read an occasional psychological thriller and am picky about the authors, D.F. Bailey has definitely been added to the list!
They are deep enough that I had to read a lighter mystery after each book!

These books really delve into thought and how one might see and process things. The characters each have unusual life challenges, and how they deal with them is what you will follow. A well crafted work. This journey will take you through many levels of emotion. Great read.
